Papa Noel – Papa Noel Nono, IAD 1984

Papa Noel Nono, front

One of the most perfect Congolese albums I have ever heard
is this one by Papa Noel. He was one of the original members
of ‘Les Bantous de la Capitale’. I think his guitarwork on
this LP is simply impeccable. Unfortunately the backsleeve
doesn’t give one line of information about the rest of the
musicians, is that Malage doing vocals ? If anyone can tell
us, that would be great. In the mean time enjoy this
beautiful album.

tracks;

1 Selia Zozo
2 Madiabuana
3 Bel ami
4 Bon samaritain
5 Kizungu-zungu
6 Sisi

  1. This recording was made while Franco was in Europe. The orchestra is in fact the TP OK Jazz, but it was never released as such because it wasn’t ‘authorised’ by le Grand Maitre. The lead singer is Carlito (and Malage was recruited to replace him and because he could sing like him & knew his repertoire…).

  2. So both Carlito and Malage have fantastic voices. I like ’em a lot.
Thank you for this master info Wrldserv, I envy your borderless knowledge..thnx

  4. My version of this album entitles ‘Bel Ami’ as ‘Messager’ – either way, a lovely album. Papa Noel’s collaboration with Pappi Oviedo of Cuba is another to look out for. Thanks for the postings!

  10. Fine stuff indeed and also one of my favourite congolese albums.
I have a 2 volume VHS set of Papa Wemba’s 45th birthday concert, and Papa Noel appears and his playing is just wonderful.

  12. thanks … I have Bel Ami so I have four of these tracks, but they were so outstanding I had to get the rest of the album from where they came. The liner notes on Bel Ami have quite a lot of info on the making of Nono. If my memory serves me correct, he recorded it in Brazzaville with some relatively unknown (but sweet)singers from the other Congo.
