Oliver de Coque and his Expo ’76 Ogene Sound Super of Africa
Identity, Olumo Records Limited 1980

Oliver de Coque was a master in appearing exentric on his covers.
How do you like this 1980 version of his majesty, complete with
feather- duster and crown, shining like a new crowned king. Even
the textual lay-out is totally cool, I just love these covers. And then
the music of course is about his identity among other topics.
Nigerian highlife with lots of splendid guitars, listen to Oliver
de Coque and his Expo 76 Ogene Sound Super of Africa.

tracks;

  1. hola,
just found yr blog very recently & am just astounded. what an incredible & gracious attitude u have, so generous sharing yr incredible knowledge & collection. an absolute treasure trove u have here at global grooves. so lemme tell ya, i been trawling thru yr archival posts, i think i made thru an entire year of posts looking for 3 or 4 records featured in the collage of pictures at the top of the page. one is the hungarian looking fiddler, the other is the accordian player, the indian snakecharmer w/ a turban & te last is the african singer(?) w/ glasses & moustache on a blue background screaming to the gods. i looked all over for these intrigueing images on yr blog & clouldn’t find anything about them so i’m asking for your help. i saw a lot of great music i need to catch up on as well so i must get busy downloading(the mali orchestra series are amazing!). i remember one post where u mentioned u were getting hate-mail. thats crazy!? nothin but love from over here, so joyous to find this peerless blog. sincere thanks

  2. Hola Jovial,
Thank you for your kind words, about the pics on top of the page, they are not all refering to LP covers, some are just nice pictures.
The Hongarian looking fiddler is from a cd box called; ‘Souffles de l’Ame, Balkan Blues’ Network 33.858
a two cd box. The guy with glasses and moustache is not African. It is Arbee Stidham on the backcover of his LP,’A time for blues’.
The accordeonplayer and Indian snakecharmer are just pics I found somewhere. So stop searching, this is all there is to it. Enjoy listening to all the sweet music, cheers Jovial.

  3. thx 4 the timely response. truly an interactive place. i just grabbed the orchestre de bawobab & am tripping out on how great it is. also the les schleu schleu from haiti ws it? just killer. u have amazing taste & probably the best blog i’ve ever encountered for ethnic music. oh & thx i found the balkan blues on soulseek & its astounding but couldn’t find arbee stidham’s record u mentioned anywhere. if it’s good maybe one day u might brind it here to this blog. well nite nite & thank u

  4. Moos,

Thanks for this De Coque. I ripped a couple of other Lps by him just this week. However, I’m still looking for his People‚Äôs Club of Nigeria Lp. If it’s not too rude for us to make requests, then it would be mine.

    Thanks,

    Alexsam

  5. This is just great music, somehow I missed Oliver before but your recent post got me dancing all day. Thanks for posting this! Marc
