Hits of the 60’s, Zilizopendwa
volume two, Polydor POLP 509

hits-of-the-60s-voorkant

urgent-jumping

If people in Kenya and Tanzania speak about golden oldies they
call it respectively Zilizopendwa and Zilipendwa. The record we
bring today is from Kenya witness its title. It is a collection of
songs by various artists. I got inspired when buying the cd ‘Urgent
Jumping!’ yesterday, a dubbel album with East African ‘Musiki Wa
Dansi’ Classics. It was released by Sterns Music in 2016, STCD

to the Mara Jazz Band, the Atomic Jazz Band, the Western Jazz
Band, the Nuta Jazz Band, the Jamhuri Jazz Band and the Morogoro

that one without thinking twice if I were you..

Classic Taarab Recordings from Tanga
Nyota
Black Star Musical Club
Lucky Star Musical Club
Globe Style 1989

nyota-voorkant

lucky-star-musical-club

When I heard Best of Taarab which Stefan of Worldservice
posted last week, it made me think of this cd immediately. Globe Style
launched it in 1989 and I though it to be magical from the first time I heard it.
The Taarab recordings made in these two clubs in Tanga found following
ups by many bands afterwards. Wedding music from the Swahili people
originally, it became very popular in places like Burundi and Eastern Zaïre.
Black Star Musical Club which was founded in the fifties added guitar and
bassguitar to it. It was this cross-fertilisation between taarab and dance music
that made people in those countries listen and collect it. Listen to the great
voices of these singers, truly magic it is..

Orchestre les Mangelepa featuring
Embakasi, 1st Anniversary Album
Phonogram / ASL 1978

orchestre-les-mangelepa-voorkant

Congolese invloeden
maar toch echt Kenyaans. Een heerlijk album, niet te missen..

This is the sixth record we post by this band. It is from the year
1978 and sounds typical east African. Its style covers both benga
and cavacha, just the way we’re supposed to expect from a group
from these parts. Congolese influences but still really Kenyan.
A very nice record, not to be missed..

Vandaag weer eens iets tamelijk bijzonders.

pagina. Luister en geniet van ‘Place aux Jeunes’.
Een Kenyaanse uitgave..

Sammy Mwambi and Wana Wa Mwangeka
Dunia Haina Siri, Polygram 1990

Sammy Mwambi, voorkant

This week I came across this album by Sammy Mwambi and Mwangeka.
Warm voiced Sammy ( if that’s him )worked with les Wanyika and Vuria
Mwangeka Brothers among others. Incredible nice sound from Kenya/
Tanzania on Polygram East Africa, Nairobi. Got blown away from the
first seconds. Give it a try and enjoy. BTW, the tracks on side-b
were printed in the wrong order, I switched them back.
Some pops on side-b..

Mbaraka mwinshehe – Ukumbusho Volume 7
Polygram 1988

Mbaraka Mwinshehe, voorkant

I know this album was posted by several blogs already, best
quality however was only 256 kbps so I thought it to be justi-
fied to offer it again at 320 kbps. Mbaraka Mwinshehe’s music
is of impeccable quality so that’s not where the problem was.
For the completion of this page I hope to bring his other records
somewhere in the future as well, for now,
enjoy Ukumbusho vol.7..

Beya Moke – Various Artists
RCA 1977

Beya Moke, front

Digitizing this lp was a tricky thing to do. This album has no
spaces between the tracks and using a cd recorder I had to
place the skips manually. At a few points I missed the exact
spot so it’s best listening to it as a whole. Let’s see what we
have here. A collector of Kenyan songs of extraordinary
quality. Six different bands doing ten songs. Looking at
the backsleeve we find a list of other important
albums in the same category, the search
continues, listen and find out why..

D.O.7 Shirati Luo Voice Jazz Band –
Kenyafrica! vol. 4, Playa Sound 1976

D.O.7 Shirati, front

Yesterday I took a walk through Amsterdam, checking a few second
hand record stores and guess what happened. I stumbled upon this
wonderful lp. we had numbers 1,2,3 and 5 but 4 was still missing.
I’m so very happy with this find, Daniel Owino Misiani and his Luo
Voice Jazz Band belong to my very favourite benga groups. Very
nice to complete the series with this record, get it now and you
will not be sorry. Strong instrumental parts and vocal
harmonies make this album a solid listen..

One more thing; it would be very nice if someone
knows why every song is called after a person’s name.
I keep wondering why they do that in benga music..

Daniel Kamau – Kenyafrica ! vol. 1
Playa Sound PS 33001, 1976

Daniel Kamau, front

In the series ‘Kenyafrica !’, we had volumes two and five
so far. They were recorded in 1976 and it’s been over 3
years I posted the last one, in september 2011. Finally
I can bring you the number one in the series. It is an lp
by Daniel Kamau, he was born in the ‘Central Province’
of Kenia, the 2nd of february 1949. His parents worked
hard on their little farm to be able to raise the family.
Daniel loved to play the guitar from 9 years old but
wasn’t allowed to touch the guitars of his older brothers
because he was too young..Later he proved them all
wrong being the first to record an album of his own
still being a student. He had several hits during the
seventies, went to England and when he came back
recorded this here album. It is a sheer beauty and
I’m very glad to bring it, enjoy the benga
and pass it on to your friends..
